UARK’s History

Founded in 1965 at the University of Arkansas, the Lafayette Federal Credit Union was established to serve university employees. It later became Sequoyah Federal Credit Union and finally UARK Federal Credit Union in 1970. Initially created to facilitate direct deposit of union dues, expansion continued to help employees obtain credit.

Despite facing challenges, such as a fire in 1969 that destroyed records, strong member support enabled its rebuilding. Growth surged in 1970 with the introduction of payroll deduction and life insurance. Throughout the 1970’s and 80’s, UARK introduced new financial products, including certificates of deposit and IRAs .

In 1986, the acquisition of several hospital-based credit unions doubled its assets. In early 1990, UARK expanded services and launched VISA cards, and steadily increased its assets.

By 1994, UARK achieved record membership and strong loan growth and has continued as your thriving financial partner, proudly serving diverse employee groups across Northwest Arkansas and the UAMS Little Rock area and demonstrating its commitment to empowering members and strengthening the community.
